COSMETIC GINGIVAL GRAFTING
The gum tissue normally rests at the junction of the tooth where the enamel meets the root. When gum tissue
shrinks away from this junction and exposes the root surface, it is termed recession.
Gum recession is a problem for many people. Gum recession with exposure of the root surface and loss of
attached gingival may be caused by:
· Tooth malposition · Inflammation related to plaque
· Periodontal disease · Frenum pull
· Traumatic tooth brushing
· Inadequate attached gingival as the tooth erupts
Recession is more than just a cosmetic problem. It may lead to tooth sensitivity and exposed root surface
which are very difficult to keep clean. An exposed root surface is also more vulnerable to decay.
Cosmetic gingival grafting is indicated in cosmetically important areas:
· To establish an adequate zone of attached gingival
· To gain root coverage for improved cosmetics
· For improvement of soft tissue texture and color match

COSMETIC CROWN LENGTHENING
The position of the gum tissue, the gumline on the tooth has a dramatic effect on appearance. A "gummy"
smile makes the teeth look much smaller, and out of porportion to the rest of the teeth. A small change
in the shape or the level of the gum tissue can have a very large impact on your smile.
